Insulin {serum} normal value US: 0 - 180pmol/L insulin is an essential hormone for the proper metabolism of blood sugar {glucose} and maintenance of blood sugar level.
an increase in blood sugar causes an increase in the secretion of insulin
if the body fails to secrete and adequate amount of insulin, improper metabolism of carbohydrates and fats causes diabetes characterized by hyperglycemia and glycosuria
insulin is produced in, stored, and released from the Beta cells of the pancreas
actions of insulin: increases the uptake of glucose by the tissues, increases liver glycogen levels, increases synthesis of fatty acids, decreases glycogen breakdown by the liver, decreases breakdown of fatty acids into ketone bodies, promotes incorporation of amino acids into proteins, the adult pancreas secretes 25-50 U of insulin per day.
